Welcome to Jester's Trek.
I'm your host, Jester. I've been an EVE Online player for about six years. One of my four mains is Ripard Teg, pictured at left. Sadly, I've succumbed to "bittervet" disease, but I'm wandering the New Eden landscape (and from time to time, the MMO landscape) in search of a cure.

I'm continuing to clear out the "screw it!" file, the half-dozen or dozen EVE ship fittings that I had planned to do on this blog before I decided to unsub from EVE.  Doesn't seem to be any reason to me not to go ahead and get them out there so they're of use to someone.

With that in mind, I present the PvE Machariel that I've referenced a couple of times, notably in my Endgame Nightmare post a few months back.  This Machariel is a fantastic side-by-side companion for that Nightmare for punching through L4s or Sanctums/Havens with two ships.  Of course, it's definitely not cheap, either.  You'll spend well over a billion ISK putting this fitting together, or put another way, it costs about the same amount of ISK as a monocle.  ;-)  It also has fairly major ship-fitting requirements, though it doesn't require Advanced Weapon Upgrades V the way the rest of my end-game fits do.  And of course, as I've said many times, an expensive PvE ship is a gank target, so be careful about what systems you bring this ship into.

With all the downsides mentioned, let's talk upsides.  ;-)

First, this a DPS monster, putting out more than 900 DPS.  Even better, unlike the Nightmare, it's tuneable DPS.  Carry EMP ammo for attacking Blood and Sansha ships, Phased Plasma for Serpentis and Guristas (or even Titanium Sabot), and Fusion for attacking Angels.  As a result, in practice, the Machariel does more actual damage than the Nightmare, particularly at 30km or so.  Carry 1500 or so rounds of each type of ammo in cargo.  Some Barrage is worth carrying as well, as it extends your range to about 75-80km.  Your drone damage is pure gravy on top of that 900 DPS.  Carry full racks of Hobs and Hammerheads.  The remaining 50m3 of drone space can be applied to the logistics drones of your choice, or perhaps a flight of Valkyries instead.

Your low slots are all about increasing and enhancing that DPS.  The Republic Fleet Gyrostabs are expensive, but increase your DPS and close any CPU fitting issues you might have.  You don't need four of them; the fourth is probably not worth the extra expense.  Likewise, a lot of guys use Republic Fleet Tracking Enhancers, but I find the benefit of them to be minimal.  Having those mods in place will give your large autocannons a fall-off range of more than 50km, quite sufficient to handle L4s.  I find the Target Painter to be extremely helpful to a PvE Machariel for attacking smaller ships with those autocannons, though.  It's worth the sacrifice to your tank to have that fitted.

The Nanofiber Internal Structure increases both your agility and the speed imparted to you by the Domination afterburner.  That afterburner is really non-optional.  It should be the very first faction mod you buy for your Machariel, and adds a good 30m/s to your speed.  Flown correctly, you're going to be a lot more mobile than the typical L4 battleship, zipping from target to target at speeds approaching 650m/s.  Missions that would be painful in other battleships such as The Score or Recon Part 3 are quick and fun in a big fast Machariel.  Your Drone Link Augmentor ensures that your drones stay in your control range no matter how fast you're moving around.

The tank on this boat is fairly minimal -- about equal to or a bit superior to the Nightmare tank -- since it can simply run away and kite virtually any overly dangerous situation it might find itself in, if the DPS doesn't settle any problems first.  Still, it's probably best to go ahead and fit hardeners appropriate to the mission you're running or the rats you're dealing with.  The Dread Guristas X-Large Shield Booster was surprisingly cheap the last time I checked contracts for prices on them.  You can probably get away with a T2 or named XLSB, though.

This Machariel shines for 0.0 ratting solo, but is even better with a friend.  Pair it up with the Nightmare, or with a Raven or Dominix to tank, or even a Tengu.  The Mach will easily keep up with the T3 cruiser if both are AB fit.  This is an expensive ship, and worth it.  You'll be very very happy with it!

  1. Hi Jester - love your blog.

Since it's been a while since this was first posted, I thought I'd ask if you had any changes to the fit.

I'll be using this solo in high sec, and have worries it has enough tank or is too tempting for a gank. And any thoughts on changing the rigs a bit as it's a configuration I haven't seen anywhere else.

    Thanks again.

  2. Nope, this is still what I'd go with. You're unlikely to be ganked with just faction gear. If you're concerned about it, trade a Damage Control II for the Nanofiber and an additional shield rig for the Polycarbon.

The Semiconductor is really just a more expensive Capacitor Control Circuit and gives you more cap to run the shield booster.

  3. Thanks very much for the feedback, definitely enjoy your blog. Keep up the good work! o7

  4. seems like a mostly classic mach, but I was wondering why you chose to fit a CDFE on an active tanked ship. Fits of the week are always interesting keep it up.

  5. X-Large shield booster and no cap boosters? You are gonna dry your cap on tank-intensive missions and got destroyed or you will need to warp out/in so its bad for over billion ship fit.

Rigs should be all capacitor memory cell and cap booster is mandatory.

    1. Ugh. No, it really isn't. Read the post. The idea here is to use the AB to kite away from the majority of the rat damage while you use the superior damage projection to continue inflicting full DPS on the rats.

In practice, I find the DPS and damage mitigation is so good, I hardly have to use the shield booster at all.

But I'll grant you it's more work than brainlessly clicking the "approach" button and staying cap-stable all the time. If that's what you want to do, then use some other ship such as the Golem.

    2. That's awesome, but why would you handicap yourself like that with a more expensive setup?

61 dps less, cheap tank that's still more than enough for L4s with this kind of DPS, 84 m/s slower... but it's almost capstable and it's 100% capstable once your pair it up with another BS with transfer array, you could probably add your Gyrostabilizer II instead of a Flux Coil II or even Nanofiber Internal Structure II.

I mean your fit is a great starting point, but it feels forced in terms of DPS/speed considering you could go for a more moderate approach without having to worry about cap issues.
