Welcome to Jester's Trek.
I'm your host, Jester. I've been an EVE Online player for about six years. One of my four mains is Ripard Teg, pictured at left. Sadly, I've succumbed to "bittervet" disease, but I'm wandering the New Eden landscape (and from time to time, the MMO landscape) in search of a cure.
You can follow along, if you want...

In honor of the upcoming hybrid rebalance, let's take a look at a ship that truly sucks, shall we?

The bread-and-butter PvP ship of just about every alliance in EVE is the "shield BC".  But really, when we talk about such a ship, we really mean either the Drake or the Hurricane.  Those that want to get exotic might bring a Harbinger.  You even -- very occasionally -- see a Ferox.

Anything green, though, is simply not welcome and that is that.

So, when the hybrid rebalance is done, this ship is going to be the first one that I pull out and test.  The Brutix is the barometer.  If CCP can't fix this ship and the Megathron, then anything else they do with hybrids really doesn't matter all that much.  The reason is that the Brutix has no advantage over any other ship in any area.

It's rather sad, if you think about it:
  • every other BC does more damage at range;
  • every other BC has more range;
  • every other BC -- even the freakin' Harbinger! -- has a better tank;
  • the Harbinger can match its drone bay (keep in mind, we're talking about a Gallente ship here);
  • every other BC is at least 25% more agile; and,
  • every other BC is faster (most, 20% or more faster).
In short, fit for shields, the Brutix is the worst battle-cruiser in the game in every single measure.  It has no advantages over any other ship.  In armor-tanking, things do not improve.  A freakin' Drake armor tanks nearly as well as the Brutix does.  Roll that around in your head for a minute.

"Jester, you tool," I can hear some of you saying, "the Brutix is Tier 1.  Why are you comparing it to a bunch of Tier 2 BCs?"  Answer: because the freakin' Myrmidon is worse.  While the Myrmidon drone bay size is nice, the six turret slots and the 75 Mbit/sec drone bandwidth castrates the ship.

In fact, the Brutix is only good for one thing right now: dying.  I haven't bothered to look at the fitting GSF is using to suicide Macks, but I'll bet it looks a lot like this:

[Brutix, Kill Urself]
Magnetic Field Stabilizer II
Magnetic Field Stabilizer II
Magnetic Field Stabilizer II
Magnetic Field Stabilizer II
Reactor Control Unit I

Y-T8 Overcharged Hydrocarbon I Microwarpdrive
J5 Prototype Warp Disruptor I
X5 Prototype I Engine Enervator
X5 Prototype I Engine Enervator

Heavy Neutron Blaster II, Void M
Heavy Neutron Blaster II, Void M
Heavy Neutron Blaster II, Void M
Heavy Neutron Blaster II, Void M
Heavy Neutron Blaster II, Void M
Heavy Neutron Blaster II, Void M
Heavy Neutron Blaster II, Void M

Medium Hybrid Collision Accelerator I

Hammerhead I x5

Ripard can pump more than a thousand DPS out of this fitting before it dies in a CONCORDOKKEN fire.  So, if you want to die, the Brutix is the ship for you.

But if CCP wants to rebalance hybrids as they claim, the first fit is the one they need to work on.  You, however, can ignore it until they do.  In the meantime, October will be hybrid month for FOTWs, I've decided.  Next week, I can't decide: either Megathron or 14" penis.

  1. Hybrids needs a tweak, no doubt. That said, I disagree with some of your points:
    1) Gallente ships are armortankers. Sure u can shieldtank them, but expect a horrible tank. Thats how it should be.
    2) Gallente ships are close range blasterboats, not rail platforms. Their ranged damage is supposed to be in drones.

    So, in line with this I agree with you that the Brutix needs a better armortank. I'd consider switching the rep bonus for an armor resistbonus. In addition, CCP needs to work on how gallente ships can catch prey after the speed changes that came in Quantum Rise. Gallente ships especially, need to be able to run down opponents and hold them tight while killing them with short range weapons. Thats their fighting style.

  2. Goons are using Target Painters and sebos with all magstabs. I know cause ive been scoopin their wrecks. Yum. I love suicide gankers that use tech2 modules.

  3. Sebos? Target Painters? Really?

    Yep. Really. Side note, they didn't kill the mack on this particular attempt either.

  5. TBH all of the "tier 1" BCs are pretty bad, and I disagree about the Myrmidon being just as bad or worse than the Brutix. In fact, Myrmidon is a prime example of why CCP needs to be careful with how they rebalance hybrids- because between tweaking hybrids, releasing new T2 mods (which I suspect will include T2 Drone mods, since those are some of the most obvious examples of mods that currently don't have T2 iterations) and new EWAR drones, the Myrmidon could easily become overpowered and people still wont really use the Brutix except as a disposable gank ship.

  6. I think the following line is the confirmation that indeed, you do not actually solo or do small gang PvP (or even understand):

    "Answer: because the freakin' Myrmidon is worse. While the Myrmidon drone bay size is nice, the six turret slots and the 75 Mbit/sec drone bandwidth castrates the ship."

  7. "Sebos? Target Painters? Really?"

    I would imagine the reason is that when contending with concord, tank is moot because 99% of the time you are perma-jammed well before actually popping. The need to web is also moot as 99% of mining boats will be stationary and are not fast to begin with.

    So, ideally you want to have fast lock (to prevent them warping if passive aligned) and an increased chance to hit/damage.

  8. @Suleiman: not in a Myrm, that's for sure. Example?

  9. Actually, Gallente ships are quite good shield tankers. They have even been designed for shields in the first place and have faster shield recharge rates than even Caldari ships (look up the tests done by Pottsey).

  10. The Myrmidon is THE best solo BC at what it does - brawl down multiple people in the same ship class.

    It works well (without links/implants/faction) even up to 1 vs 5, depending on the size of the enemy ships.

    I can link you a few fights I've gotten with it, but I'll just link a blogpost about a fight I had a while ago - http://fleeonsight.blogspot.com/2011/02/molden-heath-fear-myrmidon.html

    So yes, the Myrmidon is fine. The only "buff" I would suggest for drone boats would be to drone speed - roll in a 10% bonus to drone speed along with the present 10% to drone damage & HP on drone boats currently.

  11. I'll answer for Suleiman :)

  12. @Jester- Myrmidon is not only good at PVE, but is a pretty well respected PVP ship, in fact buffer tanked Myrms w/ slaves can absolutely wreck face.

    I don't even think the pilot that made those videos is even using the full drone bandwidth to fly heavies, just hammerheads.

    Which btw, Gallente drones technically use hybrid weapons, so yet another reason the Myrmidon will likely get way more mileage out of a Hybrid weapon buff than the Brutix does.

  13. Correction, the pilot in the vids is using 2 heavy, 2 medium and one light drone mix- but is using Fed Navy Ogres in the first vid, which probably means he didn't even have his drone skills maxed when he recorded that. (he has the T2 Ogres in the second vid)

  14. And remember that tracking enhancers improve stationary target DPS too. Bizarre, but true due to improved criticals. I've scooped up plenty of loot from Goon ships during this "Interdiction", the one's I've scooped have been using tracking computers in addiction to tracking enhancers and the usual bevy of mag stabs/heat sinks.

    They also do stupid stuff like carry spare faction ammo in their cargo hold in addition to the full magazine. So perhaps their fits aren't really all that good. Or perhaps they just don't care about the ISK and value their time more.

  15. I was under the impression a dual/triple rep AC Myrm was a force to be reckoned with insmall scale battles. Maybe youtube has been lying to me.

  16. there's always the glorious triplerep myrm

  17. Hybrid failfit month and you don't even include the Eagle or a Blaster Tengu?! tsk tsk

  18. Was going to go blaster Ferox one week. But yeah, Eagle might make a good wrap-up. I miss my Eagle.
