Welcome to Jester's Trek.
I'm your host, Jester. I've been an EVE Online player for about six years. One of my four mains is Ripard Teg, pictured at left. Sadly, I've succumbed to "bittervet" disease, but I'm wandering the New Eden landscape (and from time to time, the MMO landscape) in search of a cure.
You can follow along, if you want...

Fit of the Week: Tin Can POS bash

Because of its versatility, the Manticore is my favorite bomber.  However, there's one thing that the Hound is unquestionably better at than any other bomber, and that's bashing POSes.  Here's my standard fit for that work:

[Hound, Tin Can POS Bash]
Ballistic Control System II
Ballistic Control System II
Ballistic Control System II

Catalyzed Cold-Gas I Arcjet Thrusters
Phased Weapon Navigation Array Generation Extron
Eutectic I Capacitor Charge Array

Covert Ops Cloaking Device II
'Arbalest' Siege Missile Launcher, Bane Torpedo
'Arbalest' Siege Missile Launcher, Bane Torpedo
'Arbalest' Siege Missile Launcher, Bane Torpedo
Bomb Launcher I, Shrapnel Bomb /OFFLINE

Small Warhead Calefaction Catalyst I
Small Low Friction Nozzle Joints I

There's no other bomber that has both three low slots and the CPU to make three non-faction BCSs work.  The Hound is the only game in town.  This allows the Hound to pump out between 425 and 500 DPS depending on your skills, far in excess of the competition.  You can double up on Calefaction rigs if you have a 3% CPU implant, but really, the second damage rig adds almost nothing to this already impressive-for-a-frigate DPS.  If you have sufficient patience and a cloaky hauler to carry reloads, a small cloud of Hounds fit this way can reinforce or even destroy undefended POSes all on their lonesome.

The advantage of using bombers to attack POSes is easy to see: they're nearly impossible to chase off, and the bashing can be done by anyone who can be bothered to show up, for whatever length of time they can show up.  Most often, you see this tactic used to reinforce POSes for the big fight later on.  The big boys show up to incapacitate the on-lined threats around the POS.  Then they -- for the most part -- leave, and the small boys do the grunt work of inflicting that oh-so-important 1 armor HP of damage that will start the reinforce cycle.

The other mods on this ship are mostly about supporting the ship's primary mission.  I prefer MWDs on my bombers to run gate-camps, and the meta cap recharger allows the Hound to perma-run its MWD.  This gives you the ability to orbit the POS at 35 or 40 km, motoring along at a little over 2100 m/s, which will make you difficult to get a warp-in on.  Sniper ships will be a worry, but if one appears on grid, either cloak up or shut down the MWD and warp off.  The agility rig makes it likely that you'll get away.

The bomb launcher is available if a sizable defense fleet shows up and you want to try your Hound cloud's luck at bombing the crap out of them.  Or, if a more traditional attack is contemplated, Target Painters are a great e-war support choice for bombers.  Alternately, with a 3% CPU implant, you can wedge in a Remote Sensor Dampener if that's more your thing.  A point will not fit, fortunately.  Non-gank-fit bombers have no business fitting a point, and you should work your very hardest to stay out of point range of any potential defense fleet.

I was really looking forward to buying a Naga.  I had a fitting in mind that would have made it an excellent heavier choice for POS bashes.  With the Naga losing its ability to fire torpedoes, though, that option is no longer on the table and the Tornado will probably become my medium-size POS-bashing ship of choice for the new year.  The Apocalypse remains my favorite for heavy ship for this role.

It's boring work, but sometimes it has to be done.  Keep a ship or two available for it, an adult beverage or two near at hand, and friends to chat with, and you'll find that it becomes more bearable.  Still, I'm happy that POS bashes will only be a rare part of my future, instead of a constant part.  For those of you trapped in constant POS bashing hell, though, a friendly Hound can be man's best friend.

Bash safe.  ;-)

  1. Why not the Oracle instead of the Tornado? I mean, lasers.

  2. I'd recommend using the Meta 3 painter over the Meta 4...simply because it's around 4mil cheaper last I checked.

  3. Fitting two ballistic controls, one warhead calefaction catalyst, and one bay loading accelerator lets you easily fit T2 siege missile launchers; coupled with racial Rage torpedoes, this gives you nearly 700 DPS, while having room to fit other basic amenities like propulsion and a target painter. T2 launchers have distinct advantages over Arbalest: they spam missiles faster, Rage torpedoes are cheaper than faction and do more damage, and all around you are busy for a much shorter time.

It may not be ideal for regular combat, but you're not there to do regular combat. You're there to bash a POS. I reckon it's worthwhile to do it right.

  4. @Iam: I completely agree with you (except maybe about using T2 torps, unless they are corp-supplied ;-) ). However, very few pilots can use T2 torp launchers. The skills for that usually aren't that common...

But yes, you're right, and I have Manticore and Hound fits that can do this fairly comfortably.

    J5 Prototype Warp Disruptor I

'Arbalest' Siege Missile Launcher, Caldari Navy Inferno Torpedo

Although this fit dispenses with the bomb launcher, it pumps out impressive 500+ dps depending on missile skills, and includes a point and a target painter. I prefer an afterburner for these types of fits to prevent sig radius bloom but it can easily be reworked to fit a MWD, if that's your poison.

I have characters that can fly Manticore and Hound but I started in a Nemesis and learned how to fit it for different purposes by necessity. This remains one of my favorite structure bashing and bomber gank fits.

  6. @Snaketzu: two problems. First, are you really going to pump faction torpedoes into a POS for a half-hour, hour, or longer? If you are, more power to you, but those faction torps will do more damage in my bomber than yours. ;-)

Second: I try to avoid fitting Bay Loading Accelerators onto bombers if I can help it, unless the bomber is using T2 launchers. Your *effective* DPS over a long POS bash will be much lower because you're going to be spending a lot of time reloading and doing no DPS at all.

P.S. If you like your fit, I recommend going ahead and fitting a bomb launcher to it, then just leaving it off-line as mine is. If you want to throw a bomb, you can warp off, safe up, off-line a mod or two, on-line your bomb launcher, and come back.

  7. @Snaketzu/Jester: Also, you get more DPS out of mixing a Calefaction rig and a Bay Loading rig, I'd assume due to the wonders of stacking. Having both Calefaction or both Bay Loading results in less DPS than a mix.
P.S. I dunno about EFT, but EVEHQ has a setting that allows for including reload delay in the DPS equation.

  8. When did the Naga lose the ability to shoot torps? o.O

Leave the damn test server alone for a few minutes and off it goes to get itself into strife. Worse than children, I tell you!

  9. EFT has the include reload in dps calculation Option too.

  10. Very nice but 2 comments. 1: no torps on the naga? WTF CCP?!!! 2: MWD on a bomber is generally a bad idea in mho. Having flown many in null I find that the sig radius bloom more than outweighs any speed advantage you might gain. Better off with an AB, cloak and agility rig. Otherwise your just asking for a cane or bomb to be dropped on you.

  11. being drunk and having friends to chat to is the only thing that makes a pos bash somewhat bearable

this is also why its so much fun to bash a pos bash ;)
