Welcome to Jester's Trek.
I'm your host, Jester. I've been an EVE Online player for about six years. One of my four mains is Ripard Teg, pictured at left. Sadly, I've succumbed to "bittervet" disease, but I'm wandering the New Eden landscape (and from time to time, the MMO landscape) in search of a cure.

Tributes

Picture of the week honors goes to this Goon tribute to Vile Rat:

It's a Star Map with the number of cynos in system highlighted.  In the process of lighting "candles" for VR, the Goons accidentally determined that the maximum number of cynos in a single system is 200.

This knowledge will be used against a Goon enemy in 3... 2... 1...

(It's what Vile Rat would have wanted.  RIP Vile Rat.)

Also, if this "tribute" is true, then NCdot is showing roughly about as much class as Honey Boo Boo:
(12:35:09 PM) directorbot@goonfleet.com/directorbot: Attn: Elo Knight of black legion and Super twinkey of Nc.DOT have decided to be bitches of the highest order. They used last night, time we all spent grieving and [being sad] over vilerat to shoot our structures and taunt us in local. Tonight IRC has called a level 4 cta, the highest possible and nc.dot and elo are telling their people they must show up. They think we will be too busy crying and sad to fight them and they are trying to abuse our friends death
EDIT (13/Sep/2012): Looks like NCdot may be innocent of this one.  At the very least, they're saying on Kugu that this is nothing but an attempt to manipulate CFC players by Dabigredboat.  It might be DBRB suffering from a lack of class...

EDIT (13/Sep/2012): And now there's this video from "The Ed Show" on MSNBC.

EDIT (13/Sep/2012): Kotaku has a lovely summary of all the various tributes.

  1. That broadcast (from DBRB) was sort of 'walked back' by Mittens, who advised us to chill out, and then by Courthouse, who posted a longer broadcast:

(4:11:06 PM) directorbot@goonfleet.com/directorbot: For the last several years Goonswarm's done a very good job of villainizing our opponents. We've taken great license with the things they tell their people and more than a few times went ahead and finished sentences for them with our own spin on them. We're guilty of dancing on the graves of more than one fellow EVE player over the years and I can think of a few gamers whose real lives have been mocked by us in unsubtle ways. What I'm saying is that we're not innocent.

I'd ask us to stay above it all, but that sounds hypocritical, knowing our history. What I'm asking instead is that you not be trolled into rageposting. DBRB saw something that supertwinkey said and responded in a way that was consistent with our history but in bad taste regardless. This event can be a lesson for us in compassion and humanity or an exercise in hypocracy and goonsay.

I've had a productive chat with Vince and both of us are deeply impacted by Vile Rat's murder. Moreso, we're angry about the words that our FCs are using towards the "other side." I'll remind you all again that Vile Rat was always the champion of the better parts of human nature. Perhaps we can step back and separate our grief from our metagame for a bit.

    1. What a class act of Courthouse, and I mean that in all sincerity.

    2. I would encourage Jester to add this to the post, so that we can continue mourn the senseless death of a good man and not fan the (untrue) flames.

  2. If true, NCDot have Pearl Harbored themselves and should expect a similar nuclear response.

If not true, then CFC has blatantly COINTELPRO'd them, which seems unlikely, given the context.

    1. why unlikely? It's exactly the kind of tactic Vile Rat would have used and can be seen as a tribute. No I'm not condemning it, all's fair in love war and internet spaceships. Do understand Vile Rat was a master at framing enemies so they would switch sides and attack each other and absolutely was proud of the use of such tactics.

    2. Am guessing Goonswarm would not do this walk back if they were not concerned the "planting of words" actually came from Goonswarm itself ie they framed NCDot on this one. Am not on either side, simply looking at past history and framing your enemy is part of the game. Nor do I think it's right or wrong either way. I do think the people jumping up and frothing over it need to stop being naive though and being emotionally manipulated by either side on statements that may have been planted and are unverified.

  3. *troll sense tingling*

Anyways, ignoring the bad press that's sure to generate tears in troll land, for the record I loved to hate goonswarm on principle, although the intelligent part of me realized that such a large alliance simply had to have decent human beings like [Vile Rat] working for them.
I still love to hate Goonswarm because i believe we all need a 'foil' in this game...but that's just me fantasizing.

    1. They do make good stand-in enemies for people who are otherwise to irrelevant to have any.

  4. IRC CTAs actually go to Level 5, to be totally pedantic.

  5. That 200 cyno limit is indeed somewhat exploitable. Mobile swarm cyno jammer. Interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  6. So what you are saying is that a fleet needs only 200 individual high slots to enact a 10 minute cyno jammer?

    Oh snap.

    1. That's exactly the implication, yes. I also suddenly had a vision of 200 PL Slocats using this technique.

    2. I was just thinking about it as a poor man's cyno jammer.

There's going to be some excellent battle reports in the near future.

  7. Tar-Palantir believes you'll find SBU's and timers involved and they are Goon/their ally's SBU's. Goons aren't going to stop their Sov attacks due to the tragic real life events in Lybia, and NCdot and their allies won't stop getting fights at those timers. Those events are tragic, but it doesn't seem likely that either side with call for a truce, even a temporary one, based on them. Whether it should or not (something Tar-Palantir isn't going to pass judgement on here), the game that is Eve goes on.

Based on NCdot TS on last night's 03:00 op, no one was talking about Goons and their allies being tied up in grief or about using this moment as the perfect moment to attack. It was an NCdot fleet that jumped into a contested NCdot ally station system and Goons brought in their fleet. Normal run of the mill Sov war fleet fights. Tar-Palantir assumes a timer of some kind was involved since both sides brought large fleets at the same time. At least, that is Tar-Palantir's view of events as an insignificant grunt. He isn't in command channels/chats/forums.

As for comments in local, can't say anything about that. Having fought many wars against Goons and others who tend to be verbose/offensive in local chat (that isn't just a Goon behavior), Tar-Palantir long ago setup his client so he can't see local chat, just the list of who is in local.

  8. An Alliance that used to spam local with "Allah Akbar" after suicide ganking might be suffering from a deficiency of class? You don't say. [wonka]

  9. Jester your bias is showing making an assumption that and posting a pic that is spreading propaganda of the lowest class.

Please post a better tribute to Vile Rat that is not a poor taste propaganda framing of nc.dot by the goons. Vile Rat deserved better than his own corpmates bad taste on that one as well as nc.dot deserving better than that low blow too.

  11. The IRC level 4 cta for wednesday night ustz was scheduled on tuesday evening, before anyone had even heard news of the attack in Libya, much less that Eve players had lost a comrade. This was business as usual for the Tribute war and any attempt to portray operations wednesday night as anything else is goons cashing in on the death of one of their own for propaganda purposes. In other words, situation normal.

    1. *shrug* propaganda or perfect opportunity to troll? When did goon's systemic behavior slip from trolling to 'propaganda'?

The fact is though he's gone and no amount of short term trolling is going to be remembered, by either side.

  12. It's pretty funny, actually. Apparently, and no surprise really, but Americans are obviously oblivious to their own senseless violence, hypocrisy and zealotry, but quick to condem anyone who doesn't conform to "Planet USA" mentality. IF ncdot and others took the opportunity to do some attacks while the goons were busy feeling sad, that is pretty much standard goon behaviour ALL the time. If it's goons being assholes, that's ok. If someone else applies the same strategy to the goons, well, that's just insensitive. Poor babies, suck it up or go back to Maple Story.

As for the "senseless attack" on the embassy, I can't see how the goons could complain about that either. That's goon tactics to the "T". At the very least the cry-baby goons should appreciate that people in real life have the stones to use goon-like tactics in real life, instead of hiding behind some electrons on the Internet. Obviously not, though. Apparently at the same time, the goons figure that Americans should be untouchable, like the goons are? American politicians and power brokers have been fucking with governments, countries and economies, all over the world, for decade after decade. Americans also tend to defend this "right" of theirs to fuck with anyone, any time, and always for the "big two" reasons. Power and money. In life though, unlike the sad little Eve crowd, there are repercussions. There's accountability. Americans like to write themselves as the good guys, or the "poor victims" if their schemes go sideways, but the people who blew up the embassy are no more spineless, reprehensible or fanatic than all the Americans who have slaughtered truly innocent people all over the world. If America does it, they're just applying their foreign policy, if anyone else does it, they're terrorists. Convenient, yes? For all the fanatical Americans, you need to pay attention to the fact that there are people that don't agree with your foreign policy, and they are willing to fuck with you the way you've been fucking with the world. It doesn't matter whether you think blowing up a building because of a movie is "right" or not, you need to remember, or more likely discover, that the whole world DOESN'T think like Americans, thankfully. If people like VR work for American organizations that work at shoving American tendrils into other countries, they need to get it through their thick skulls that it's highly likely people that live in that country don't want them there. Even American puppet countries. The number of lives affected by that bombing is fairly insignificant compared to the number of lives fucked up by American policy abroad. Freedom of speech, like freedom, is an illusion force fed down our throats by the power brokers so we can remain distracted, in debt to our asses, and oblivious to the rat maze we live in. Don't want to get blown up? Stay at home, mind your own business and work at fixing everything that is broken in America instead of wandering off and fucking with other people's countries, lives, and in this case, religions.

    1. Anything remotely accurate or useful contained in your post will be overlooked by anyone who might have gained something from reading it, because of the hate and anger you failed to control while writing it. Your insulting, ignorant, and misguided rant about American foreign policy demonstrates the selfish destructiveness and narrow-minded hatred which is at the root of extremism, and by dehumanizing your enemies you have abandoned your own, as well.

      Delete
    2. Please learn what a paragraph is. Please. Oh, and get a clue, anger, fanaticism and blaming America for everything is just one more case of ignorant and weak minded excuses. Strong people work to change themselves and the world around them, weak people blame others for why they can't.

      Delete
    3. So basically, the death of people connected to America is okay because of their questionable foreign policy? Right. Especially those in the service of peaceful diplomacy.

Honestly the real paralell between the US and Goonswarm is that they're both 'on top', and so when they do something questionable everybody jumps on it far more than if, say, Indonesia or AAA did the same. Yes, they should be held accountable for what they do, but they shouldn't be treated as some kind of special literally-zombie-Hitler evil while everyone else is allowed complex motives.

And in the end, what does this have to do with Vile Rat? I'm fairly sure he wasn't personally directing American oppression by working in the consulate.

      Delete
    4. LOL. As mentioned, Americans are completely ok with American zealotry and fanaticism. No one else is allowed, on Planet USA. You boys have drank the koolaid, so nothing anyone will say or do will ever change that, or your opinion. Regurgitating the rhetoric from your mis-information services doesn't change reality. For an English speaking person, anywhere outside of North America, you know what the most important thing is? Not likely. Make sure you are identified as NOT being an American. That's "funny" in a non-funny way, but it's sad from an American perspective.

As for VR, he worked for and in an organization that locates itself all over the world in an effort to control other countries, people and economies to the benefit of the USA. People resent that, and because the USA has shit spread all over the planet, it's easy for small groups and angry people to screw with them. Americans need to stay home and fix their own problems before they go out and create more, but, that isn't a good way to make truck loads of money. I'm not angry, and didn't write in anger. I just don't agree with American mentality, and I'm not a rah rah USA fanboy. That is what your problem is with me. If you believe theUSA is on "top", good for you. the reality is, the USA is a bully and is currently perched atop a precarious and crumbling tower of your own design. At any time, any one of a number of countries or people could bring it crashing to the ground, and all that is required is a US dollar bill - not guns or bombs. VR was in the wrong place at the wrong time, but that is no different than the tens or hundreds of thousands of non-combatants that the USA has plowed under while following their agenda.

Again, I would have thought that the goons above anyone else, would have appreciated the attacks as real world examples of what they do in-game all the time. I don't understand their hypocrisy on this one, unless of course they're just basically the two-faced douches that everyone believes. VR was someplace Americans, nor any country other than the nationals, need to be, and an Eve player was killed. Out of game. It's a big deal apparently. At the same time, the same goons called for people, IN-GAME, to harass an individual and try to get him to off himself. That was apparently great lolz. Perhaps just another example of busted thinking?

  14. Yo DBRB, you're a real cracker-jack FC and ima let you finish, but Mittens had the best use of a real world death to motivate the troops of all time, ALL TIME.

When we work through our grief, we don't make the world a better place: no parks are cleaned, no trees are planted, no at risk youth are given guidance. We log on, we X up and we structure grind. That is how we work through our sorrow because we are a bunch of god-damned neck beards.
