Welcome to Jester's Trek.
I'm your host, Jester. I've been an EVE Online player for about six years. One of my four mains is Ripard Teg, pictured at left. Sadly, I've succumbed to "bittervet" disease, but I'm wandering the New Eden landscape (and from time to time, the MMO landscape) in search of a cure.

Fit of the Week: Bait Skiff/Procurer

You're roaming through low- or null-sec, or you're camping a gate, with a small group of frigates or maybe by yourself.  The gate flashes, or a ship lands in your bubble.  You see that it's a Skiff.  "Sweet!" you think.  "Exhumer kill!"  You tackle it, only to find that this is almost literally a wolf in sheep's clothing...

[Skiff, Obvious bait]
Damage Control II
Drone Damage Amplifier II

Experimental 10MN Afterburner I
Warp Scrambler II
Stasis Webifier II
Adaptive Invulnerability Field II
Adaptive Invulnerability Field II

Small Unstable Power Fluctuator I

Medium Core Defense Field Extender I
Medium Core Defense Field Extender I

Hammerhead II x5

Dear Heaven is this ship silly.  Almost 85k EHP.  Almost 200 DPS.  And 640m/s on that afterburner.  More speed than that if you spring for a faction one.  And why not?  Any frigate dumb enough to tackle this boat is going to come to a quick, painful, and humiliating end so you probably won't lose it.  Twenty seconds to murder a typical Ranis, for instance.  And it will have no trouble at all tanking gate guns if it has to.  You'll need a 3% grid implant to make this fit work, but having the neut on your side is worth it.  It gives you a good chance of effectively tackling two frigates at a time.  Scram and web the frig you're killing, neut out his buddy in the cap-reliant one.  If he doesn't flee, kill him when the first one's dead.

This boat can face a five frigate gank fleet for anywhere from 90 seconds to two minutes, depending on the gank fleet's comp.  And it can kill an average of one frigate every 10-20 seconds during that time, again depending on comp.  Remember to over-heat your hardeners.  They'll run, or they'll all die.  Or you can use this ship to scout for a frig gang of your own.

A lot of other writers have done great jobs talking about how the Mining Barge/Exhumer rebalance is failing to meet its goals.  Quite ironically, I think I liked this argument from themittani.com best.  But one thing's definitely for sure: Skiffs and Procurers aren't for mining and any Skiff or Procurer you see out there probably isn't doing it.  High-sec miners have switched to Mackinaws and Retrievers in droves.  It does everything, including tanking against suicide ganks, "well enough."

That's leaving the Skiff and Procurer for baiting.  You can easily fit a cyno on them if you want, for Heaven's sake, and use it as hot-drop bait.

Here's the equivalent Procurer fit, which is only slightly less silly:

[Procurer, Obvious bait]
Damage Control II
Micro Auxiliary Power Core II

10MN Afterburner II
Warp Scrambler II
Stasis Webifier II
Adaptive Invulnerability Field II

Small Unstable Power Fluctuator I

Medium Polycarbon Engine Housing I
Medium Core Defense Field Extender I
Medium Core Defense Field Extender I

Hobgoblin II x5

The main thing the Procurer gives up is speed.  It's less than half the speed of the Skiff, so frigs might actually be able to get away from you if they're silly enough to tackle you and realize you're not mining.  And it's obviously not quite as resilient.  It can only kill three or four frigates single-handedly.

Both of these fits are cap-stable, and both of them are quick and agile enough to get around pretty well and might even be able to crash back to gate if the camp on the other side is too big.  But by all means, scout them around with something cloaky to keep that from being necessary.  Pick your targets, and your targets are frigates looking for a sweet helpless care-bear.  They might even suspect you're bait and they still won't be able to resist.  It's an Exhumer kill!

The really ironic thing?  If you want, you can take off the neut, fit a Strip Miner and actually mine with the thing while you sit there and hope to get tackled.  The Procurer can do it with no other changes.  You'll have to take the Drone Damage Amp off the Skiff and replace it with a Power Diagnostic System.  You lose about 30 DPS.

But you gain the ability to actually mine in a Skiff or a Procurer.  If you, you know, want to.

"Mine" safe!

All Fits of the Week are intended as general guidelines only.  You may not have the skills needed for this exact fit.  If you do not, feel free to adjust the fit to suit to meet your skills, including using meta 3 guns and "best named" defenses and e-war.  Ships can also be adjusted to use faction or dead-space modules depending on the budget of the pilot flying it.  Each FOTW is intended as a general guide to introduce you to concepts that will help you fit and to fly that particular type of ship more aggressively and well.

  1. I'd love to see actual Q ships in this game, but in the meantime these fits will have to do.

  2. I've "bait mined" a few times with my alt's procurer now. Couldn't be arsed roaming, and I needed some of the low-sec mins anyways for some of my production. Worked quite well, got a killmail and ore I needed!

  3. "...take off the neut, fit a Strip Miner and actually mine with the thing while you sit there and hope to get tackled."

This is actually the key to a successful trap. Forget the neut - it doesn't add much and a Proc/Skiff that isn't mining is too obvious.

Just park it in a low sec belt, start mining, and it won't be long before someone shows up, looking to kill you. With the tank these puppies can fit, you've got plenty of time for the cavalry to jump in and pop your victim. After your mates clean up the wreck and rep back your damage, you are ready to roll again.

And, with a Proc, even if you lose the ship, you'll probably mine enough to replace it while waiting for a victim to show up (esp. if you bought a bunch of them at the old pre-buff 2M ISK price).

  4. Now if they would just buff the rorq to a similar degree we could get really silly and replace sentry carriers.

  5. Procurer cyno fit here is pretty awesome http://i.imgur.com/x7d0o.jpg

I forget where I found that link, my apologies if it was from here originally. I hadn't realized the mining barge rebalance was so much of a fustercluck. Jeezuz, what does that say about all the other changes they're making? Many lolz to be had in the near future, that's for sure.

Oh, and the mittens dot com is a decent news website, surprisingly enough. It's easy to weed out the pure propaganda pieces and what's left is some really good stuff. Except for the James 315 articles. He needs to be locked up with Ted Kaczynski.

  6. If the attacking frig is smart he will kill the drones first, leaving you to die a slow death.

    1. In practice, I find it's easy to keep Hammerheads alive under frigate attack. Just recall the one that's being attacked and put it back out a few times and the frigate pilot in question will get frustrated pretty fast.

    2. You could probably replace that neut with a remote armor repper, to help keep your drones up long enough to kill the frig.

Or, on the Skiff, you could just load two flights of Hob IIs, instead of one flight of Hammerhead IIs. In most cases, Hobs will do more damage against frigs.

  7. Thanks for these fits!

I haven't opened up EvE or another Out-Of-Game Tool to try out some Fighting Procurer fits, but have been thinking about for some lowsec mining. This gives me a starting point.

  8. How long does it take the frig to kill the drones? What if there are five frigs?

    1. Against five competently flown frigs, you are dead. They don't need to target the drones.

  9. Bait for a waiting gang? Sure.
Bait and hope to take down a frig solo? lol no.

Any frig pilot worth a damn will simply kill the 5 drones and easily work away that defenseless 80k hp.

  10. The Procuror fit is actually not far off the fit I use for mining in lowsec, people tend to leave me alone because it's just not worth killing and there's always the possibility that I'm bait.

  11. i made a skiff with 380 dps and 160k ehp and still mined wail you wait lol
