Welcome to Jester's Trek.
I'm your host, Jester. I've been an EVE Online player for about six years. One of my four mains is Ripard Teg, pictured at left. Sadly, I've succumbed to "bittervet" disease, but I'm wandering the New Eden landscape (and from time to time, the MMO landscape) in search of a cure.

Kill of the Week: General principles

Freighter and jump freighter pilots beware: the current CFC null-sec campaign has pretty much wound down, which means there's going to be a lot more Goon gank fleets roaming high-sec looking for things to shoot at.  This week, they were hitting freighters and jump freighters in abundance.  Often, the freighters weren't even carrying particularly good stuff.  If the giant pile of stuff in the freighters looked promising, they seem to have been shooting it first on general principles and asking whether it was worth it later.

This Obelisk and this Charon were nice examples.  And there were lots of other examples not quite so impressive.  As I said, Goons were out in force.  And of course there was the occasional raving idiot that made himself an obvious gank target, including this.

I literally have no words for that one.  gg, Ville DeJeep.

ANYway, for the actual KOTW I thought I'd go with this Impel:
http://www.eve-kill.net/?a=kill_detail&kll_id=15239818

You don't see a lot of Deep Space Transports because by and large, they're almost ridiculously bad.  Sure, they carry a lot, but an Iteron Mark V generally carries more and it's a tech 1 industrial.  And of course, the more that you're carrying, the more likely it is that you're going to get ganked.  In the past, DSTs might have been able to hold off a determined gank squad.  But in these modern days of volley damage, the best-tanked Impel in New Eden can't hold off more than eight or so Tornadoes.  And this was not exactly the best-tanked Impel in New Eden.

Needless to say, carrying this much crap in a ship with no cloak is a poor idea.  Carrying it in a ship with a 20 second align time and no prop mod is even worse: DSTs have the worst align time of any non-capital ship in the game.  And the amount and variety of faction and dead-space gear aboard was simply a guarantee of this ship's death.  Do I have to say one more time that Red Frog Freight is a good thing?  I guess I do.

In the meantime, friends don't let friends buy or fly Deep Space Transports.  It's arguable they're currently the most useless ship class in New Eden.  Use a cloaky hauler, use Red Frog, or use an Orca instead.

Number of dead super-caps this week: 1

This part of the report is really easy.  Exactly one super-cap died this week, this Nyx ganked by the CFC in low-sec.  It's funny how standardized the fits on these things are becoming, don't you think?  Extra neut here, slight variation in the exact fighters or fighter-bombers carried there, maybe an officer mod or two in the mids or highs, but that's about it.  Story on this one is straight-forward: he was out solo, destroying reinforced Customs Offices in low-sec.  As one of the comments on the KM puts it, it's not hard to find your target when there's a little timer counting down to the moment you can tackle it.  You settle into a nice comfortable align, get a little sleepy because it's so late, and before you know it, something decloaks in front of you and lights a cyno.  If you don't react instantly, you're doomed.  Needless to say, he didn't kill anyone before he went down.

And that was it.  Super-cap proliferation proceeds unimpeded by loss-mails.

  1. Wait, if none of them died then how is Evil Banana firing Neutron Blaster Cannon II from their pod?

    1. Self-destruction, most likely.

    2. Or maybe one of them went down to CONCORD before the freighter blew?

  2. Why does your obelisk kill link to the Rev kill by RnK?

    1. Fixed. I'll have more to say about that kill next week, I suspect.

  3. I can't remember if you already did a post about it or not but the running total of freighter ganks lost to Goons in high sec was over 1.5 Trillion back in August. I read something somewhere that compared the Ministry of Love against the Burn Jita campaign but can't seem to find it.

  5. Just so you know, your 'Obelisk' is linking to a dread kill in w-space.

  6. Any thoughts on how extremely valuable cargo will be moved once orca bays are scannable come December?

    1. The same way that it was moved prior to the introduction of the Orca. By smart players.

Seriously, using the Orca corp bay is just the lazy man's method of secure hauling. There are many tactics which are commonly used by full-time haulers, which make them relatively safe from ganking.

    2. Small items can be moved in a slaved legion or proteus. Even if they decloak you (you are covops cloak ofc), you can make it take around 60 tornados to alpha you.

    3. What Michael Said, or if you're slightly less rich a properly tanked Pilgrim will do an OK job provided what you're transporting is not insanely expensive. Oh and don't go through Uedeama or Niarja and the imediate surrounding area unless you absolutely have to. That 5 billion blue print probably actually is worth doing those extra 36 jumps.

Or my personal preference have somebody else run the risks. Sure Black Frog/Blue Frog are expensive (not that bad tbh) but the availability of large collaterals means you're effectively buying insurance on whatever they're are moving for you.

    4. Uedama and Niarja are no big deal.

I fly through them regularly without being ganked, carrying BPOs and all sorts of other pricey goodies - as do many other haulers, incl. Red Frog.

Jester's KotW posts are somewhat misleading, regarding the actual danger of being ganked. All of the expensive haulers KotW's were exclusively flown by foolish players, most of whom have since been booted from their corps and/or left the game in shame.

And, safe cargo hauling isn't really about the ship or the fit. Fly smart, fly safe, and you'll have no problems.

  9. Yawn. When haulers routinely become the KotW, you know something is wrong with the game.

BTW, Jester, what do you think about the upcoming Retribution fix to defenders making wardecs permanent, to trap the aggressors?

    2. I was one of those who pointed out Jester's mistake and when I did so, no comments had been posted, so I had that brief glimmer of hope that I was the first one and was therefore a helper. Turns out I need to stop caring as much as someone else will take care of the problem for me.

  11. There are good reasons to choose a properly fit deep space transport over a t1 hauler. Properly fit meaning: MWD+cloak and/or tanked of course. Not saying they don't need a buff, though.

  12. I would argue with you the DSTs are not the most useless ships in the game. For example, you can fit the impel with a couple of nanos, and then use the mwd + cloak maneuver to move through lowsec safely. The advantage being that you can more more than twice as much as a cloaky hauler at a time.

That said, there is a chance of being decloaked and insta-lock hictors can ruin your day. But for a quiet lowsec pipe, I find it worth the risk.

    1. Yeah, I think an Iteron II is more likely to be the most useless ship in the game.

The MWD+cloak trick is ok, but a scout and an alt with a web is much better.

  13. While these big ISK cargos are interesting Jester from what I've been hearing their has been a long list of only >1 billion ISK ganks that are really surprising people

  14. Another way to avoid being ganked is teamwork.
DSTs support good buffers. Now send 2 logistics along with good sensorboosting and lock the DST while it aligns.
You won't be 100% safe but you will never be if you undock. But you have 1. some scouts that can report if there already is a gate camp and if not 2. if the attackers warp in you have decent chance to get your rep chain work before they start hitting.

But yeah. Either use red/blue frog to haul your stuff or don't be so lazy and split your stuff and fly more often. Ask a friend to help if you have any.

And again yeah, it is quit stupid to fly a Tech 2 "tanky hauler" with no tank. And that LSE doesn't count as tank for a ship with 7 low slots. Wouldn't be ungankable but those 3 would kill a good tanked DST.

  15. Deep space transport are mostly for hauling from trade hubs with cargo a bit more valuable than what you haul in a Iteron 5. I think its 150 mil safe celling over a tech 1 100 mil safe celling. Not a huge jump up, but they are far cheaper than a Freighter or Orca.

The blockade runner the more useful ship outside very busy trade hubs tho.

    ReplyDelete
  16. The Goons doesn't hit "empty" freighters because of fun.
It's because of double-wrapping. They have no idea what the freighter has, but assume it worth shooting. They are rarely wrong.

I'm tempted to fly to Ueadama with a double-wrapped exotic dancer and a platinum insurance.

  17. I use a DST transport for a very specific cargo: something larger than what I can carry in my Blockade Runner, but more expensive than what I would carry in a Tech 1 frigate, or if I'm going into a quiet low sec system and I'm worried about a 1 ship gank attempt. The two built in warp core stabs is a nice bonus. Anything too big or too expensive I simply put in the jump freighter and burn a cyno ship.

If I were going to make DST more useful, 10-20% more cargo space and improved agility would be on the top of the list. Something to make it more attractive than an Orca.

  18. Enough said. 89 Plexes and they dropped. All BP's were researched originals, so the value is off:
