Welcome to Jester's Trek.
I'm your host, Jester. I've been an EVE Online player for about six years. One of my four mains is Ripard Teg, pictured at left. Sadly, I've succumbed to "bittervet" disease, but I'm wandering the New Eden landscape (and from time to time, the MMO landscape) in search of a cure.

Two announcements

First off, Trebor Daehdoow has finally made it official: he's going to be running for CSM8.  Trebor will definitely be receiving one of my six endorsements this year.  As I've said several times on this blog (most recently here), he's a proven CSM work-horse, has an important perspective on the game, provides needed continuity and experience from the past three CSMs, and will be critical in helping to formulate both CSM8's communications strategy and how this whole stake-holder thing is going to work.  Here's to hoping he'll be re-elected!

At this point, there are only five members of CSM7 that haven't announced for CSM8.  And most of them are unlikely to be re-elected even if they do run.  The exception is UAxDEATH.  It'll be interesting to see which way he goes.

The second announcement concerns your humble narrator.  Thanks to CCP Tyr who made it possible, I can now share the following...

Gee, I wonder where I might be going between April 22 and April 29...

  1. Stupid question incoming:

What does CSM stand for? And what is it?

    1. CSM = Council of Stellar Management. It's a group of 14 EVE players, elected by the other EVE players, that act as customer advocates and a sounding board for future development of EVE Online.

They are in constant contact with EVE developers through e-mail and a private section of the EVE-O forums. Twice per year, they are invited to Iceland for more intensive sessions for CCP to get their thoughts on the development of EVE's two major expansions per year.

They are elected once per year, in the February/March time-frame.

  2. How apt! Tyr was the Norse god of Justice.

I'm pleased CCP decided to invite you. With a few other things they've done recently such as the own3d prize money they've shown themselves as a really class company.

  3. I think it's a ruse, I think you're really going to Hawaii to work on a tan:-) Good luck Jester, I really hope you're elected...

  4. I think that Dovinian has said he's not running within Test. Even if he hasn't, fairly safe to say he isn't: very busy with new job, and has dropped lots of his work within the Alliance.

  5. Who said whining does you no good ;o)
Happy trails to Iceland and be sure to try out the kæstur hákar, gives you - well - something somewhere for sure!

(and Trebor running again is excellent! Guess that's one less of my votes for you)

  6. Congratulations! As my grandmother was fond of saying: 'It's not what you know but who you know.'

  8. I just listened to your interview on Zebra Crossing and it was excellent. But wow Mynnna did horrible and sounded like he didn’t give a damn who knew he would get the votes just because his Goon alliance/coal.

Also, how many damn wormhole reps do we really need?

Jester, why are there no candidates that are running on the platform from the new player perspective? I don’t mean someone running for the "little guys" but more so someone running with less than 1 yr experience that can bring the new player experience to the table? It sounded like the people running are all +4 year vets already, so they are somewhat distanced from that experience considering all that has changed since they were "new players". When was the last time they did the tutorials when you make a new toon? 1-2 folks like that would be quite helpful if I was putting together a team of players to improve of all things “new player attraction & experience”.

    1. The problem with that is that CCP isn't putting together a team to improve all things "new player attraction & experience". It's one thing CSM regularly look at, certainly, but there are plenty of others they look at just as regularly - sov mechanics, ship balancing etc, where a new player is unlikely to provide much useful information. Any candidate who only has knowledge of or interest in a few limited subjects is a poor choice considering that the CSM's scope is the whole of EVE. It's actually something of a problem that the CSM has become factionalized with candidates representing a relatively small "constituency" rather than the playerbase as a whole, though as Hans demonstrated in CSM7 the fact that a CSM is elected on a single issue doesn't necessarily disqualify them from providing useful input on other areas.

Personally I prefer to vote for the candidates with the minimum amount of partisanship who are most likely to try and represent the playerbase as a whole rather than a key section of it in particular; Trebor and Jester, for example.

  9. Politicians accepting freebie junkets is nothing new, I guess.

Is it against EVE Online's EULA to accept RL money for my votes? Because that is the only way I will ever waste a single second of my time to 'vote' in CCP's annual Dog & Pony Show.

Having said that, good luck to you, and good luck with redefining 'stakeholder' again, as well as offering your opinions as to 'what nullsec should be' for the 4th CSM in a row. Or is it 5?

    1. For the record, I'm paying my own way to Iceland and even to Fanfest. They're making a ticket available for me to purchase at registration, they're not giving it to me...

  10. Delighted that Tyr managed to find a spare ticket for you to buy Ripard. Great news. Hopefully I'll be shaking your hand in Iceland congratulating your election as a CSM8 member!
