Welcome to Jester's Trek.
I'm your host, Jester. I've been an EVE Online player for about six years. One of my four mains is Ripard Teg, pictured at left. Sadly, I've succumbed to "bittervet" disease, but I'm wandering the New Eden landscape (and from time to time, the MMO landscape) in search of a cure.
You can follow along, if you want...

Propaganda play

Now that the CSM8 voting is over, picture of the week honors goes to this funny bit of electioneering, presumably produced by Goonswarm and spotted by DarthNefarius being posted to Local channels here and there in New Eden:

That made me laugh.  Goons are so good at this sort of thing.  Anyway, now that the voting is over, I'll finally be publishing my posts on who I think is going to win this thing, and why, and just maybe a few thoughts on who should win it.  CSM8 election results will be announced at the CCP Presents keynote on Saturday, April 27.

Speaking of Goon propaganda, it's been amusing to me to watch mynnna, Marc Scaurus, Bagehi, and Alikchi spin out reasons on Twitter why there's been absolutely no mention of Burn Jita on themittani.com today.  mynnna finally got a little exasperated and typed this little gem:
We're actually paid to publish whatever we please. I hope the difference isn't lost on you.
This means, I suppose, that the money men behind TMC would frown on paying a TMC staff writer a hundred million ISK to advertise an event that might cost the GSF a JF or freighter kill.  ;-)  But it's rather hysterical in context, a purported gaming news site not covering... you know... gaming news.  I'm reminded of the end of Superman II, Lois Lane having received Superman's magic obliviate kiss, looking at a colleague and asking guilelessly "What's going on in the world today?"

What's going on, indeed...

Marc allowed as how TMC would certainly cover the event... after it's over.

    1. Guess that makes TMC the equivalent of The O'Reilly Factor.

And Mittens would be either Bush, Jr. (as the fuehrer of the Goons) or Nixon (as the resigned chairman of CSM7).

  3. \o/ I got a mention in a blog :D Can I vote now along with the rest of HI SEC since its the 19th CCP Dolan? ;-)

  4. Hello jester, I would like to comment that internally, many of the writers for TMC are too busy enjoying burn jita to write about it. We may certainly post end of day reports, but I have a feeling that the people who read TMCwould know about burn jita anyways, and the people who don't read TMC wouldn't know anyways. Last year, burn jita notices were pasted all over the login page, and people still missed all the sirens.

Wehave noticed that this year, there are considerably less super juicy kills, those presumably having been weeded out by the tireless work of "normal" freighter gankers, who have averaged 1.5 billion killed per day for the past YEAR.

Gotta love mynnna - at least he doesn't even try to pretend that TMC is an objective news site. That's why he got my vote for CSM.

For the record, I don't care whether or not TMC is part of the Goon propaganda machine. They do it well and if players are dumb enough to believe everything they read, so be it.

Perhaps CCP should hire Mittens and the TMC to handle their propaganda, too.

    1. don't be fucking stupid...

"We're actually paid to publish whatever we please."

      means

"TMC's bias comes entirely from it's writers"

or since you're incredibly fucking simple:

"TMC is an objective news site"

    2. "TMC's bias comes entirely from it's writers" = "TMC is an objective news site"?

lol... can anyone actually be stupid enough to believe these two phrases are equivalent?

Well, I guess Bill O'Reilly would agree with you....

    3. More accurately Rachel Maddow, Chris Matthews, Bill Maher, Stewart or pretty much anyone on 7 of the 8 major news networks in the US.

  6. Did you miss where Mittens announced Burn Jita in his public "state of the alliance" post?

Also, there's a stream on the main page that DBRB is running.

  7. Okay, great, now can we stop pretending TMC is anything OTHER than Goon Propaganda Central?

  8. Burn Jita, but no Hulkageddon? I'm a sad panda.

Helicity has become a non-entity since he got smacked down by CCP with that temp ban.

  9. We have an article going out tomorrow. One of the things about writing about news, is not to write it before the fact. TMC does not do a lot of real time publishing. Our publishing timetable is much like a newspaper. And, we're not going to change our standards just to suit you.

    1. It was news that Burn Jita 2.0 was announced. Covering it last week would not have been "before the fact."

    2. Standards? What standards?

    3. Interesting, because the newspaper I work for writes previews for events that they know are going to happen.

By the way you should go remove some of your CSM8 coverage - after all some of what you posted was before the event, so presumably isn't "news".

      Delete
    4. The only problem with that is that the event had been announced well in advance. To not even have any mention of a scheduled event this huge - even a speculative piece - would be like not mentioning anything about the Olympics until the first day of competition was over.

Please don't try to feed us the line that TMC is anything other than a Goon-run, Goon-biased outlet. It's a well-done outlet, but reading it carries the same massive caveat of any other state-run media outlet.

    5. Nice spin.

So the anticipation of an event isn't newsworthy? Wonder why any news site covers presedential elections before they are over.

    6. For reference, this piece was posted about 20 hours after the Burn started, and after TMC had published five other articles that day.

The stream started about three hours after this piece was published.

Here's the story about a FW fight before the fact.

Here's live coverage of the Caldari Prime event.

Coverage leading up to Caldari prime.

Coverage of the Syndicate Competitive League before it happened.

I could go on, but everyone just knows you're lying to cover your butt.

    8. Yes, obviously TMC never publishes articles before the news happens. These articles never appeared:

      http://themittani.com/news/storm-predicted-black-rise
      http://themittani.com/features/event-flight-thousand-rifters-iii

The last of those did not appear less than a week ago. The first of those was not written by someone named Alizabeth. We've always been at war with Eastasia.

  10. I find it sad that goons can get away with suppressing votes with that link they plastered all over high sec. It is clear that CCP had no issue with this, which puts to the lie all the last minute crap by CCP about "getting out the vote".

    1. If Hydra and Outbreak can be banned from the Alliance Tournament for the "sake of the game" then I propose that anyone spamming that gets a 30 day ban. You know, for the sake of the game.

    2. Given the cognitive state of most EVE players (null or highsec) I am not surprised that it might have worked. That said, people being fooled by that awesome poster should probably not open a "newspaper" in real life.

"Oh, wait! A link! In Jita! About changed CSM voting period! Must be true since everything in Jita is true!"
(Yes, it might have been pasted everywhere. People are dumb everywhere, not only in Jita.)

    3. It's does bring up an interesting point. While I find it just funny, if anyone where to believe this it would put CCP in a rather strange spot. CCP has said it is one of the companies goals to have more voter participation in the CSM election. But here you have a sandbox mettagame who's goal is to drive down voter participation. And specifically with the voter block CCP has said it would like to target. Now I can't recite the EULA, but if things like this start to get out of hand, CCP may find itself having to make a ruling on this kind of stuff.

    4. I find it sad that you exist

    5. I think it's silly enough that I doubt it fooled many people at all. It probably brought in more votes than it cost by raising awareness of the CSM elections (And to be EVE-elitest, anyone taken in by it, is probably playing the wrong game)

      Delete
    6. CCP shouldn't have a problem with it (perhaps with the exception of the use of their logo and trademark artwork appearing on the scam) it is totally befitting the ethos of the game.
If a single highsec'er is stupid enough to fall for it Goons deserve to void their vote in their favour and control the minds that allowed it to happen from their position of faux authority.

      Delete
    7. CCP should take action against such fraud. This is not an in-game scam, this impacts stuff in meatspace (such as, you know, little things like who gets flown to Iceland for CSM summits).

Look at GTC versus PLEX: You are prohibited from scamming with GTC, but scamming with PLEX is perfectly fine.

If the poster had been about Burn Jita being cancelled or some such, fair play. In this case it's an attempt to prevent people from voting in a real election impacting real people.

  11. Interesting bit of propaganda. I wonder if anyone at CCP will be looking to swing the ban hammer. Representing oneself as CCP or an employee of CCP is specifically forbidden by the EULA and that sure does look like the corporate logo on that document.

I'm surprised you didn't notice that, Ripard.

  12. If a voter was dumb enough to have fallen for that little bit of obvious propaganda, I'm glad they didn't vote.

    1. Don't get on my case about your site's failure. TMC has covered news "as it happens" lots of times before. The fact that this one wasn't covered was frankly just pathetic.

The most believable excuse I read all day was that TMC writers were too busy participating in the news to write about it.

    2. The Captan's comment above has many examples of TMC covering events the day they happened.
