Welcome to Jester's Trek.
I'm your host, Jester. I've been an EVE Online player for about six years. One of my four mains is Ripard Teg, pictured at left. Sadly, I've succumbed to "bittervet" disease, but I'm wandering the New Eden landscape (and from time to time, the MMO landscape) in search of a cure.

Bonus QOTW: The Source

It's been a week for quotables, hasn't it? Here's The Mittani in his latest Goonswarm CEO Update...
We recently saw that PL is willing to side with even their hated enemies in BL to wound us - as they did in Daras, by abusing our endearingly naive trust. Our treaties hold for now, but we should have no illusions about their ultimate desires. We have suffered essentially continuous attack since our inception...
*cough* *sputter* Wait... what? What did you say?
We have suffered essentially continuous attack since our inception
That's what I thought you said.

Don't mind me. I'll just be over here being just a tiny bit smug.

  1. On the one hand, you are completely correct: goonfleet propaganda routinely casts itself as the underdog in any fight that can reasonably be called "fair". It's not always the case, in situations where calling ourselves the underdog is ludicrous we cook up some other excuse -- nobody claimed TEST outmatched us (until N3 joined in), and there are other examples of propaganda for wars of blatant aggression.

On the other hand, the thing you were specifically called out for is linking an article as an example of CFC Underdog Syndrome that said nothing of the sort. That hasn't changed.

  2. Consider, too, that Mittens usually writes these things after having a few brews. As we saw from the famous incident at Fanfest past, Mittens gets into true character when he is falling down drunk.

  3. "We have suffered essentially continuous attack since our inception" isn't specific and could apply to anything, such as mining or hauling ships getting griefed, since day 1.

The irony I see (supporting Jester) comes from past forum posts by GSF forum warriors *inviting* visits and/or attacks on their space, because of boredom.

  4. Here, let me quote the part of that sentence that you left out in an attempt to keep up the argument.

"[...]and the mere fact that we have conquered and won our most recent however-many wars has only enraged the pubbie hordes still more against us."

    Total underdog material, that.

    1. "Total underdog material, that." Yup, all that adds to it is that Mittens is painting the CFC as a victorious underdog. It's great propaganda material to be sure, to a third party without a stake in nul-sec politics is just face palm quality tripe.

PL being PL apparently clashes with the post B-R narrative and thus Mittens spiel, for everyone else PL killing supers in low sec is business as usual.

    2. I think I'm going to go ahead and say that while you've got a point, it's also pretty evident that our respective biases are at play here. To me it's not "bloobloobloo we're the underdog", it's stating a fact. To you, it's something else, and to Jester, it's evidently inconvenient enough to leave out half the sentence when trying to make his point.

    3. The issue here was "We have suffered essentially continuous attack since our inception". Name the last time that GSF territory was attacked? Hint, it's been a long freaking time.

    4. It's not just that half-sentence, though. It's every word that I've italicized in that paragraph. All of them stress how much poor Goons are picked on.

    5. That doesn't change the fact that the CFC hasn't been under attack in like, forever.

"We have been attacked and we have managed to defeat the attackers, though being underdogs" is what that sentence says.

    6. There's a lexographic error. Should read "captured and won most of our recent wards..."

  5. "...suffered essentially continuous attack since our inception... doesn't need to be specific as to what is attacked, just that the Poor Ol Downtrodden, Who Me? Nice Guy Best Friend to Noobs and Pubbies Alike Goons have CONSTANTLY, and obviously unjustly, SUFFERED continuous attacks of some kind since the first creepy Goon cracked it's wittle shell.

Who cares if its mining or hauling ships getting griefed or fleet of subcaps getting whelped... or fleets of gank ships getting CONCORDED left and right for DAYS, in Jita... or fleets of Titans stabbing others in the heart over and over and over again and again... while the moon goo pours in faster than they can sell it...

    Yea... poor effin goons.

  6. OH NOES! Teh goons are under attack! As a loyal RvB Goon-slave I must quickly leap to their defence!!!!

... oh wait, we don't actually do that.

Maybe he's losing his touch a bit? Good propaganda shouldn't be so over the top..

    1. Apparently Gevlon has had an impact. No one above had mentioned RvB but here you are to trot that out.

      Mittens = content

      Gevlon = Mittens?

    3. I disagree Louis. Mittens may exaggerate, but he does, whatever propaganda writers do since they exist ... planting the image of a high outside thread inside the willing readers minds to make them rally under the banner.

With 0 sec becomming a stagnant 3 party war the thread is propably real, that the CFC members are becomming rusty in fleet combat because in a "cold war" scenario big fights are absent

Some paragraphes below the SOTA adresses the issue again. This time mittens endorses his members to go and fight the NPC space residents within the CfC territory, again because of ..... practice.

All in all i enjoyed reading this piece because it doesn't exaggerates to the point where propaganda becomes a simple lie and it misses the usual dose of disrespect for other players outside the CFC.

    4. Oh I'm not saying that The Mittani can't write anymore! Just that the quality has declined a bit

  11. Bottom line, the failed lawyer indicates there will be no summer war, only massive supercap building and more consolidation by the Three Powers. That is of course, a REAL incentive to have people log in. Now, given that the failed lawyer's empire embraces lying as a strategic tool (in fairness, all major powers, in any walk of life, do as well), who knows if there will be a summer war or not.

Frankly, I don't think there will be as the RMT lords have to establish the total control over industry post July 22, and that will take some time.

But given that CCP keeps pushing back any serious changes to sov mechanics for at least a year, we can expect the the stagnation of null sec power bloc politics to remain. The boredom caused by that stagnation is also a large contributor to the declining sub base, as well of course as the slow motion annihilation on high sec income.

The true irony of the situation that exists in Eve is that the cartels are blaming CCP for the sorry state of affairs. If the cartels had really wanted to break up this disaster, they would have long ago directed CCP to make massive changes to sov mechanics, and barring that, simply decided to hammer each other into many smaller groups, which would revert null sec back to a more dynamic place, which would drive subs up. But no, the RMT lords instead conquer smaller groups and consolidate, and make more non-aggression pacts.

The PCU and sub numbers (like we will ever see them released again) in Sept/ October are going to quite interesting.

    1. If you prune out all the paranoia, tinfoil and conspiracy theory crafting in Dinsdale's post what is left its not actually that bad an analysis of the situation.

    2. You can't fault a group for playing a game "to win."

Mynnna in particular has a really great series on ground-up sov at TMC. You should read it. It's been brought to CCP's attention, I can assure you of that. The matter is not "they are hiding it for sake of RMT!"

Why are the big groups consolidating power? Because they can. Because all groups act in their ownsself-interest, and you can't expect people to handicap themselves.

Groups like CFC and PL and N3 can and have complained to CCP to fix broken mechanics. But since they are playing "to win," they will exploit those mechanics until CCP either gets a clue, fixes them, or is forced to fix them because said mechanic broke the game way, way harder than CCP expected.
